SolidIRC was founded on 1.1.2003 by Phantomal, Stoffel, Pharx, Pchaos, |Fritz, Yakoma, Sartorius, Bonfire and Top-Gun. Except for Top-Gun, all founders are from Germany, which makes SolidIRC a German IRC Network. When you look at the list of staff members, you will see that some of the original founders of the Network are still working for its success.

The name "SolidIRC" is an allusion to the old Network we were on and worked for, which is named "LiquidIRC." We simply didn't want such a liquid management level like it was there, so we called ourselves SolidIRC and kept a solid management level here, which means that we decided very carefully who would and would not be members of our staff team, and that we have rules for staff members concerning how to act.

Before SolidIRC started its business, staff had a long week full of software tests and server configuration nights. We tested different IRCd's, services packages and security software and how they work together. Most of the Software we chose is still in use today - in the current version of course.

After the first year, at the end of 2003 the first massive attack against Solidirc started. And, at a time where servers had 75 Gigabytes of traffic included, the cost of that attack was approximately 4000 Euro, which we had to pay. Everyone on the Staff team knew who attacked us, but nobody was able to prove it. So we payed the bill and changed the provider to a better one, Xantron Online, which was a small German provider. During this period of time (one week) SolidIRC was offline. No IRC, no Website. Before we reopened SolidIRC, we discussed the situation with Xantron and clarified what would happen if or when we would get attacked again.

One year later, at the end of 2004 the second attack reached SolidIRC. This time we had no idea who did it, but it seems someone used our name to agitate other IRC networks against us. So it may be that they attacked us in common instead of talking to us. Xantron Online was very quick. They shutdown our servers and added Firewall rules for the whole data center to block those ddos and flood traffic. After one week of work, SolidIRC was back online and working.

The next change at SolidIRC was nothing technical. Germany's laws against computer crime changed. So we had to change our policy too. We decided to remove every community which was dealing with illegal things like movie or music sharing. We gave them 4 weeks of grace time to find a new home and after a month they're all gone. Our Usercount decreased from approximately 1600 down to 200 users in 2005. But in this period of time, a new community came to us: Magic League, a gaming portal for the fantasy card game "Magic: the Gathering." We talked to them and helped them to make SolidIRC a good home, and today, after about three years, they're still here.

At the end of 2007 we had to shutdown our Website. We used the PHP-Nuke Content Management System, which has been patched and improved by Phantomal since 2004. But there were too many security holes to fight against them. At the end of 2007 some scriptkiddies hacked the CMS every day. Whenever we closed a security hole, they found the next one. So we decided to shutdown the whole page and start over with a new software. On 27.12.2007 we reopened the page, based on the new 1.5 Series of the Joomla! Content Management System.
